Create Print Layout Packages

With the Printing Designer, you can create and edit print layouts and layout packages, available in both SaaS and on-premises deployments.

A layout package is a collection of ArcGIS Pro layouts stored as a single portal item. VertiGIS Studio products can reference these packages to produce advanced print outputs.

You can also create layouts using VertiGIS Studio Desktop Printing. Your choice depends on your licensing and the complexity of your layout requirements.

Create Layout Packages with Studio Printing Designer

When you use Studio Printing to create layout packages, they are saved to your Portal or ArcGIS Online, which you can then share as portal items.

The layouts are automatically converted to ArcGIS Pro layouts when you save them in Designer.

You do not require a Desktop Printing or ArcGIS Pro license to create layout packages in Printing Designer. However, SaaS use with your own Portal requires a subdomain subscription.

To create a layout package in Studio Printing Designer:

  1. Go to File > New > Blank Layout Package.

  2. Click Create.

The Create Layout Package window opens.

  3. Configure the layout package settings, as described in the table below.

    Setting

    Description

Name Enter a unique identifier for the layout package.
Share Specify whether the layout package should be Private, or shared with the Organization or the Public.
Description (Optional) Enter descriptive text for the layout package. Use this field to summarize the purpose, contents, or intended use.
Default Select the layout for the Default page. This layout is used for single and series page prints. This page type requires a map frame.
Cover (Optional) Select the layout for the Cover page. This layout is used for cover page prints as the first page of your document. This page type typically has no map frame.
Overview (Optional) Select the layout for the overview page prints. This layout shows the extent of the Default pages in the map. An Overview page is used only for series prints. If no Overview layout is available, the Default layout is used.
Legend (Optional) Select the layout for the Legend page. This layout is used for Legend page prints as the last page of your document. The number of Legend pages depends on the map content and additional client settings. This page type requires a Legend element and an Invisible map frame.
  4. Click Create.

  5. Configure the layout as necessary.

  6. Click Save. The layout package is automatically converted to an ArcGIS Pro layout and saved on your Portal or ArcGIS Online.

  7. Share your layout package.

The Printing Designer does not support all available layout items included in the Printing Designer to be used in ArcGIS Pro layouts.

Create Print Layout Packages with Studio Desktop Printing

When you create layouts in Studio Desktop Printing, avoid opening and saving those layouts in Studio Printing Designer. Not all layout properties can be preserved when layouts are converted between the Printing Designer and the ArcGIS Pro layout formats.

Creating layouts with Studio Desktop Printing is ideal if you use more complex layout elements than what is offered in ArcGIS Pro.

You can create layouts or layout packages directly in Desktop Printing using ArcGIS Pro layout tools or Esri layout templates. Then, share your layouts or layout packages as portal items in ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online.

This requires a Studio Desktop license and ArcGIS Pro license.

Refer to the Studio Desktop Printing documentation for more information.
