VertiGIS Studio Printing uses two primary components to create and generate ArcGIS Pro-based prints: the Printing Designer and the Printing Engine.
The Printing Designer and Printing Engine serve different purposes, as described in the table below.
Component |
Purpose |
VertiGIS Studio Printing Designer |
Provides the interface for creating, editing, previewing, and managing print layouts. |
VertiGIS Studio Printing Engine |
Processes print requests and generates the print output. The Engine builds on the existing ArcGIS Server print utility and runs as a geoprocessing service in ArcGIS Server. |
The Printing Engine is not a web application or a program that users run directly. After it is published, it exists as a geoprocessing service in ArcGIS Server. Applications such as VertiGIS Studio Web and Studio Desktop send print requests to this service, which renders the map and generates the requested output.
The VertiGIS Studio Printing Engine .msi file is used to prepare and publish the Printing Engine. The installer itself is not the Printing Engine.
Run the .msi file on a machine that has a compatible version of ArcGIS Pro installed and can connect to the ArcGIS Enterprise environment where you want to publish the Printing Engine. This machine can be a workstation, laptop, or server. Other ArcGIS Enterprise components do not need to be installed on the machine.
The version of ArcGIS Pro must be compatible with the target ArcGIS Enterprise version. This compatibility is important because the Python libraries used when publishing the geoprocessing service must align with the target ArcGIS Enterprise environment. For compatibility information, see Esri's Web tool compatibility documentation.
If a suitable ArcGIS Pro environment is not available, you can run the Printing Engine installer on the machine that runs ArcGIS Server. When referring to this alternative, it is important to identify the ArcGIS Server machine specifically rather than the ArcGIS Enterprise environment as a whole, because an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment can consist of multiple machines.
Installing and publishing the Printing Engine are two separate steps:
1.Install
Run the VertiGIS Studio Printing Engine .msi file on the ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Server machine. The installation places the files and tools required to publish the Printing Engine on that machine.
2.Publish
Use the VertiGIS Studio Printing Engine Post Installer, or another supported publishing method, to deploy the Printing Engine to ArcGIS Enterprise.
After publishing is complete, the Printing Engine runs as a geoprocessing service in ArcGIS Server. The machine where you ran the .msi installer does not host or run the published Printing Engine unless that machine is also the ArcGIS Server machine.
The installer files are not required for print processing after the Engine has been successfully published. If they are no longer needed for maintenance or republishing, the Printing Engine installer can be uninstalled from the machine where it was run.
