One-Time Setup

Prev Top Next More

Depending on the environment and types of host application(s) you choose, you may have to do some preliminary setup before you start to use VertiGIS Studio Workflow.

If you are evaluating VertiGIS Studio Workflow, the quickest way to get started is to use cloud Workflow and run your workflows in the Sandbox, VertiGIS Studio Workflow's built-in test environment. All you need is an ArcGIS Online account. You can get a free account here. Sign in to Workflow Designer using your ArcGIS Online account and follow the steps in Get Started to create and run your first workflow. You can perform the one-time setup at any time later.

On-Premises Workflow vs. Cloud Workflow

VertiGIS Studio Workflow is designed to run in the cloud or on premises.

In the Cloud: In the cloud version of VertiGIS Studio Workflow, you use the cloud offering of Workflow Designer to design workflows. Usually, client workflows are saved to your ArcGIS Online account. Alternatively, you can save your client workflows to your on-premises portal by obtaining an apps.vertigisstudio.com subdomain and pointing it at your portal. Contact Support to get a subdomain.

On Premises: In the on-premises version of VertiGIS Studio Workflow, you use your on-premises deployment of Workflow Designer to design workflows. Client workflows are saved either to Portal for ArcGIS or to ArcGIS Online, depending on how you configure your deployment.

Installing VertiGIS Studio Workflow on premises has two main benefits:

On-premises Workflow allows you to create server workflows—workflows that run on the server instead of on the client. Server workflows allow you to do certain tasks that you cannot do on the client, like querying databases, managing files on the server, and sending email.

If your organization has an on-premises installation of Portal for ArcGIS, you can configure VertiGIS Studio Workflow to work with your portal, eliminating the need for VertiGIS Studio Workflow to access the Internet.

To use VertiGIS Studio Workflow on premises, you do not need to have Portal for ArcGIS on premises. You can use on-premises Workflow with ArcGIS Online.

The table below summarizes the differences between cloud Workflow and on-premises Workflow.
