ArcGIS web maps are web-based maps that you create in Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online. You can add ArcGIS web maps to your Essentials sites.
In Essentials, web maps created in Portal for ArcGIS behave the same as web maps created in ArcGIS Online. They are added the same way, the inheritance works the same, and so on. When you understand how one works, you also understand how the other works.
To add an ArcGIS web map to a site, you configure a reference to the web map. When a site references a web map, the site includes all its own configured components and settings, as well as components and settings that it inherits from the web map. The site inherits:
Map Services and Layers: *
ArcGIS Server tiled map services, dynamic map services, feature layers, image services and vector tile layers.
OGC (WMS and WMTS)
KML
Bing Maps **
Web tiled layers, including Open Street Maps
GeoRSS (Simple and GML)
Layers from shapefiles
Layers from CSV and TXT files
GPX waypoints, tracks, and routes
Routes, Route Stops, and Route Directions
Map notes
Basemaps
Bookmarks
Pop-ups: Pop-ups appear in the site as field settings for the layer. If the pop-up contains media links, the links are added to the layer as feature hyperlinks.
* Essentials does not support presentations in web maps.
** To reference a web map that contains one or more Bing Maps layers, you must first add a Bing Maps service connection.
Override the Inherited Configuration
You can modify or remove components and settings that a site inherits from an ArcGIS web map.
For example, suppose a web map has a bookmark called City Center, and your site references the web map. If you edit your site and change the inherited bookmark's display name to Downtown, the bookmark will appear as Downtown in Essentials and in the site's viewers. If you then edit the source web map and change the bookmark's name from City Center to Central Donville, Essentials and the viewers will continue to refer to the bookmark as Downtown. Your change in the site is preserved.
Removing the bookmark from the source web map removes the bookmark from your site.

Inherit Another Site's Configuration
To add a web map from Portal for ArcGIS, you must either know the URL or have a service connection configured for the portal. Configuring a service connection allows you to search the portal by keyword.
To add an ArcGIS web map that contains one or more Bing Maps layers, you must first configure a Bing Maps service connection. The service connection stores the Bing Maps key that Essentials requires to access the layers. For instructions, see Add a Bing Maps Service Connection.
To add an ArcGIS web map to a site:
You can also add a reference to a web map when you create a site.
In
In the References area, click Add Reference.
Select Reference a web map from ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS, and then Next.
Do one of the following:
Enter URL
Enter the web map's URL into the box, and then click Next.
Search
To limit the search to web maps that belong to your ArcGIS organization, select the Organization content only checkbox.
If you clear the checkbox, the search includes your organization's content and public content from outside your organization.
If Essentials is registered with ArcGIS Online and you have added a Portal for ArcGIS service connection, select the portal that you want to search—search Portal for ArcGIS (based on the service connection) or search ArcGIS Online (based on the ability to search that comes with registration).
Enter the term that you want to search for.
Search results display while you type. The more information that you provide, the smaller the list of search results. You can stop at any time and browse the results.
In the search results, a padlock beside a web map indicates that the web map is private.
In the search results, select the web map that you want to add.
Click Next.
If you selected a private web map, enter your user name and password, and then click Next.
Click Finish.
Click Save Site.
When the source web map changes, the changes are not automatically reflected in a site that references the web map. You must manually refresh web maps to see the changes in your site.
To refresh web maps:
In
In the References area, click the Refresh Web Maps icon.
Essentials updates the site with any changes that have been made in the source web maps that the site references.
To remove a reference to a web map:
In
In the References section, click the Remove icon next to the web map reference that you want to remove.
You are prompted to confirm.
Click OK.
